Ambode orders LASTMA not to impound traffic offenders’ vehicles

Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has directed the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) to adopt a system where traffic offenders are booked instead of confiscating their vehicles to aid the free flow of traffic across the metropolis.

Speaking to senior officials of LASTMA on Thursday, the permanent secretary, Ministry of Transport, Oluseyi Whenu, said the government appreciates their contribution in managing the traffic in the state but the new policy is aimed at aiding the flow of traffic in the state.

“That is the minimum we owe the people of the state”, he said.

In a statement signed by the Sina Thorpe, Public Relations Officer in the Ministry of Transportation, Mr. Whenu said the state was putting in place a better traffic management and documentation procedure where traffic offenders are booked and given a grace period for payment and defaulters apprehended at home through the information on the motor vehicle database.

“Since LASTMA officials are a reflection of the state government, they should ensure that their activities add value to the government’s covenant with Lagos residents to make life easier for them,” he said.

He said Lagosians should reciprocate the government’s humanness by obeying all traffic laws and regulations.

Mr. Whenu said all motorists, whose vehicles have been seized by LASTMA in the past, should visit the appropriate LASTMA depot to claim them after presenting proper documentation.
