LASTMA boss seeks modern traffic control method

The new General Manager of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Mr. Bashir Braimah, has urged the officers of the agency to devise a modern method of removing gridlock in the state without chasing vehicles.

Braimah, who assumed duty at the agency Oshodi headquarters on Friday, told senior LASTMA officers on Sunday that the vision of the current administration was to remove negative acts from the agency.
Braimah, who replaced Babatunde Edu, was the Director of Home Affairs in the Ministry of Home Affairs and Culture before his appointment.
He said, “We are committed to professionalism through human capacity building. Everybody in LASTMA should know that competency and commitment should be their watchwords.
“We should device scientific methods of unlocking gridlock in the state and do away with the old practice of chasing vehicles. We should apply the use of electronic documentation to arrest defaulters. Gone are the days of impunity and extortion of money from motorists. All vices capable of damaging the image of the government should be done away it.”
The LASTMA boss said the agency was the engine room of the state’s economic growth, adding that such could only be achieved when traffic officers were dedicated to duty.
“Henceforth, the focus of the agency will be to facilitate seamless driving on Lagos roads where goods and services will be delivered within time frame. When traffic flows motorists will burn less fuel, save energy and time. Man- hour loss and insecurity will be eliminated. This will have multiplier effect on the state economy, because savings will lead to investment,” he added.
Braimah said since Lagos was the commercial and economic hub centre of Nigeria and West Africa sub region, it was imperative for traffic management approach to be in line with the best global practices.
He urged LASTMA officers to be on the same page with Governor Akinwunmi Ambode-led administration in the effort to re position the state as the number one call for investors.
